This month our presenter is Andrew Crawford, Managing Director of the Sounds Air Group. As the title suggests, Andrew will cover the history, current operations, and future plans of iconic Marlborough airline Sounds Air and associated businesses. Soundsair last year announced plans to become the first regional airline to offer zero-emission flights, signing a letter of intent to purchase 19-seat, ES-19 electric powered aircraft from Swedish company Heart Aerospace.
Andrew followed a career in small businesses in Sydney for five years, London for 3 years, and Auckland for 10 years, in supply, installation and hire of medium to large diesel generators. In 2003 he and his family bought a third of Sounds Air and moved to Blenheim. At that time, Sounds Air had one Cessna Caravan C208 flying 8,000 passengers per annum and 7 employees. Sounds Air now has a fleet of four C208 Cessna Caravans and six Pilatus PC12s and the four companies of the Sounds Air Group have 85 employees.
The airline will fly 120,000 passengers this year providing an invaluable service between several centres – in some cases on routes not serviced by other carriers. All flights are conducted under single-engined aircraft Instrument Flight Rules.
We look forward to seeing you at this month’s presentation. Please call, text, or email Des Ashton with any questions (contact details above).
