SUBJECT: Aviation Quality and Safety Management

Phillip is a licenced and degree qualified aero-engineer with a career spanning 37 yrs and still going strong. He has worked for Air New Zealand, TES Aviation in the UK and for last 7yrs he has been the Safety and Quality Assurance Manager at Airwork and also the Quality Manager for the NZ Warbirds Association at Ardmore. He has recently established the consultancy business Icarus Aviation Safety Ltd, (www.icarus.co.nz) specialising in providing safety management services to aviation organisations. His presentation will focus on 3 specific areas:

(1) On the 26th Jan 2014, the landing gear of a Boeing 737 aircraft collapsed upon landing at Honiara, in the Solomon Islands. What caused this accident and the resultant write-off of the $13 million aircraft?

(2) The NZ Warbirds Association, based at Ardmore in Auckland is benefiting from a period of significant growth. So, what's the buzz at Warbirds?

(3) The CAA has mandated the implementation of Safety Management systems (SMS) for certificated aviation organisations. What is SMS, and how is it different to the traditional Quality Management framework which
has governed civil aviation activities for decades?
