Hamilton Branch Meeting "Aviation and Philately"

DATE: Wed 23 August 2017
TIME: 19:30 hrs / 7.30pm
VENUE: Glenview Club, Peacockes Road, Glenview, Hamilton.
SUBJECT: Aviation and Philately

John completed his apprenticeship at De Havillands, Hatfield in 1968 and came over to NZ in 1970 joining NAC. He had 33yrs with the airline, leaving in 2003 and starting his own consultancy which was largely associated with commercial aircraft movements around the world. He started collecting stamps as a school boy and like so many put the hobby aside when work became a priority. Re opening his interest a few years ago, he is now the President of the Pukekohe Stamp Club and becoming an active member of the Auckland Philatelic scene. One of his collection themes is "Aircraft on Stamps" and he has amassed many thousands of stamps in this category. He will share some thoughts of this hobby with us and will bring along some of his albums to show us. His presentation is by power point and he may well add a few slides to showcase some of his memorabilia collection which he has recently taken out of storage!!

Thanks to those (20) who attended last month's meeting, when Mr. Alan Reynolds, (ex- W/O RNZAF, Armourer), gave us all a very interesting talk to explain all the various pieces of armament and other items of various a/c that have served with our AirForce. Some of these items were from Alan's own private collection, and others he borrowed from the Classic Flyers Museum,Tauranga. After this we were given a short powerpoint presentation showing just how these items were fitted and used on the a/c, which included some photo's of live ordanance being used in air to ground gunnery and rockets of various sizes, all in all,a very well presented lecture, so thanks Al, for stepping up into the breech!!

Okay folks, some sad news and good news from Warbirds. Last week well known Visitor Centre Manager, Mr.Vale Les Larsen, whose attention to detail kept him on the go, and the hangar was "his own" garage, passed away at home and was farewelled on Thursday by a good contingent of Warbirds personal.

Now for some good news, on Sat/19th and Sun/20th of August, Otorohanga is hosting Steamfest 2017. Woodsy will take the Fox Moth DH83, (ZK-APT) and do joyrides on Sat, and on Sun he will race a train and a Model T in the afternoon. I've just become an official associate member of Warbirds, so I hope to keep you all up to date with what's going on.
