RNZAF Lady Flyer – her personal journey
Kelly joined as the only girl on a large Wings Course of 18 and was streamed onto the Jet Basic Course graduating in 1998. Operational Conversion on the Aermacchi was followed by a fair bit of fuss in the media as she was then officially the first female in the RNZAF to be a fighter pilot.
In 2001 she was posted to Nowra to train on the Skyhawk which she flew until December that year when the RNZAF Strike Force was disbanded.
Deciding to stay in the Air Force she was appointed as Aide-de-camp to the Governor General before converting to the C130 Hercules in 2003.
In 2008, now with a husband and two boys she resigned to move to Canterbury and live the good life on a small lifestyle block in Loburn. Unable to quite keep away from aviation she retrained as an Air Traffic Controller. She currently works on the Enroute Area Radar Sector in Christchurch.
